Pipe cleaners

This was quite cool. I read in a magazine how to do it. You need a 50mm lens or similar, turn it backwards in front of your camera and shoot through it. Quite tricky but it can be done. This is colorful pipe cleaners. And a little work done in PS CS5.

I´ll be travelling a bit, I think!
As I mentioned on Catching light I will go on  trip starting Thursday. I hope. The flight I had booked is now on strike and grounded. Tomorrow I will try to get a train ticket instead. So, keep your fingers crossed for me. If things work out I will be back next Wednesday in the afternoon. I have prepared next weeks post and it is set on schedule. If it does not work, just wait a few hours and I´ll be back to fix it.

I know some of you are curious. On my Travelblog is a post with the plans. IF it works that is, as travel plans was ruined and I have to change bookings.  :(

Recept - Recipe:

(Corn Syrup) RECIPE for standard bubbles:

You can use any unit of measure as long as the ratio is still the same (6:2:1)

6 cups water (For my friend Greg Silsby - I use an specially formulated H2O formula that you may purchase for $20/gallon. But if you don’t want to pay $20/gallon just get it from your faucet and don’t tell everyone tap water is my secret formulated H2O.)

2 cups dish soap (I choose to use Dawn)

1 cup corn syrup (I use Karo light corn syrup)

Tip – for stronger bubbles, or even to make larger bubbles you can triple the amount of corn syrup, or adjust and experiment.

FROZEN / FROST BUBBLES

I will add more info about the frost bubbles when the temps drop below freezing! I will say I started with the same formula but made some minor adjustments.

New info as of November 26th, 2014:

For the Frost Bubbles I would start with the mixture as mentioned above. Just remember, that the bubbles pop easier when it’s freezing cold outside! If you want them to be stronger, add more light corn syrup. I would start with this approach first to make sure you get your photo. Then if you feel lucky try thinning down a bit with more water so the bubble is more transparent!

When is the best time to photograph frost bubbles?

I would look for temps below 10 deg F (-12,2°C) , although I heard you can do this at 15 deg F (-9,4°C) if you wait long enough. When the temps are 5 deg F or lower the frost can appear quickly, which means less time in the cold and more photos to be taken! Also it is important to note that it works best when there is very little WIND. It’s hard to take photos when your bubbles are blowing all over the place or popping.

Also, I generally shoot in the am as the sun is rising so the temps are usually still cold, but often too warm mid-day.

Now a CRITICAL piece of information:

My bubbles popped a lot when landing, even in the snow. However after several tries in the same spot, but popped bubbles form a platform for the next bubbles to stick. I usually have about 5 or more pop before I get one to stick. Also I would get close to the surface where I want the bubble as this made it easier.

J-LUBE BUBBLE FORMULA (glidmedel)

If my memory serves me correctly, this recipe was shared by Joyce Hill and Greg Silsby. Thank you two for sharing as I can’t wait to give it a try!

From watching the videos, this formula looks to be stronger than the Corn Syrup formula, but I can’t say for sure until I give it a try myself. I will likely use both recipes. You can scale down proportionately if you like, but here is the recipe:

1 bottle Dawn Dish Soap

1 Tablespoon J-Lube powder

3 gallons of water

First in a container pour the Dawn Dish soap. Next, thoroughly mix in the tablespoon of J-Lube powder. Once mixed in, add the 3 gallons of water and mix again!

Q:  So Joshua ... when did you add the food coloring? I tried some, and it seemed that the food coloring "fell" out of the bubbles as soon as I blew them. Got lots of colored spots on the snow, but clear bubbles.

A: Joshua T Rowe I froze the bubbles at night and then went out in the morning and put the food coloring on them. I let the food coloring in the freezer to get chilled.

This is easy to do. You need a flower and a clear glas with water. Put the flower in the water and the glas in your freezer. But not for too long. The ice has to be clear for you to be able to take shots. You need good lighting. Maybe a flashlight as well.

After using the quick selection tool in CS5 to erase the background I accidently hit the Fill tool and it was set to "Content aware". Gave me this shot that I liked. It filled the empty space of the shot with it´s own copies. I liked it.

Edit / Fill / Content aware then converted to BW for Weekend in Black and white.

Man kan få tjockflytande vattendroppar genom att lägga i salt i vattnet. Saltvattner kan tex användas för tårar.

För att få så bra effekt som möjligt måste rummet släckas ner. Jag har hållit lamporna med vänster hand och kameran i höger. Jodå, det går även om man har en systemkamera.

To get as much effect as possible you have to darken the room. I held the lamps with left hand and the camera in my right. Yes, you can do that even with a big one. I have a Canon 500D.

Min - my "studio"

Eftersom jag inte hade någon levande modell, utan tog en staty från Grekland, så gjorde jag min studio under databordet. Där gick det att få relativt mörkt. Jag fick ta vad jag hade för att få staty och kamera på rätt höjd gentemot varandra. Belysningen jag använde var min lilla cykellampa. Den vita som ligger på CD-fodralet. Statyn är belyst enbart med den. När jag trodde statyn var klar gjorde jag några svep med lampan för att få spåren. Gick åt lite övning men med digitala kameror gör det ju inget.

As I did not have a live model I took my little statue from Greese. It is small so I made my "studio" under my computer table where I could get it rather dark. I took what I could to get the statue and the camera positioned correctly. As a flashlight I used my little bike lamp. The white one that is on teh CD cover. he statue is lit only with that one and when I thought the statue was done I made some movements with the lamp to get the trails. It took some practice. But we got digitals so that does not matter. :)

TV  = ca 30s (men stängde av kameran när det var färdigbelyst, det fungerar också. - but closed the camera when I was done.  That worked to)

Perspektiv

Som gammal konstruktör o fritidfotograf tänkte jag inte på att yngre personer kanske inte förstår begreppet "perspektiv" riktigt. Jag har det ju så att säga inbakat i systemet. Av deltagarna var egentligen bara Monkan som fixade ett perspektiv fast hon gjorde en tavla i perspektiv, och jag rätade ut en hylla i mitt exempel. Att känna till hur perspektivet fungerar är otroligt viktigt för tecknare och målare. För en fotograf kan det vara viktigt att planera sin bild utifrån ett perspektiv, då bilder ofta ser förvrängda och obalanserade ut pgav att perspektivet ligger fel.

Enkelt uttryckt så är ju perspektivet den punkt dit alla räta linjer möts. Utom de som är horisontella eller  lodräta för de går bara ut ut bilden. Jag har gjort ett par enkla bilder på min hall där man ser hur linjerna möts och hur punkten förflyttas bara av att man flyttar sig en meter i sidled.
